Upland areas are scarce in southern Britain, and the Bannau Brycheiniog form an important link between the isolated uplands of Dartmoor and Exmoor in south west England and the more extensive uplands of Snowdonia and northern England.
The uplands of the Bannau Brycheiniog play an important role in the distribution of freshwater in South Wales. The Rivers Usk, Monnow, Nedd and Tawe all start on the upland habitats of the Bannau Brycheiniog. As our climate changes, the management of this land will play a critical role in whether rivers flood or run dry.
