Starting on Tuesday 7th February, the draft appraisal documents will be available for consultation on the Authority’s website and also at public exhibition at the Brecon Guildhall on 18th February from 11am to 4pm which will enable residents and others the chance to comment and find out more about the Brecon Conservation Area. The consultation period for the Brecon Conservation Area Appraisal and Boundary Map runs from the 7th February to 27th March 2012.
Brecon Conservation Area was designated in 1970 in recognition of its special historic character the draft appraisal document sets out the features that contribute to the distinctiveness of the Brecon Conservation Area and identifies opportunities for its protection and enhancement. The document also proposes amendments to the boundary of the existing Conservation Area which may affect the land and property of residents in some parts of Brecon.
Development in conservation areas is more carefully controlled than elsewhere, with the intention not to prevent change, but to ensure that the important character of the area is conserved and that new development respects the distinctive character of the conservation area. Therefore, from time to time all Local Planning Authorities are required to formulate and publish proposals for the preservation and enhancement of any parts of their towns or regions which are conservation areas.
Ms Rosie Burton, Heritage Conservation Officer for Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority is keen to hear from all those who feel they may be affected by these proposals, or have anything to offer to the document itself. She said: “The purpose of the review is to identify the features of the Brecon Conservation Area that are important to its character such as; the age and historic significance of the buildings, architectural styles, historic street layouts, open spaces, landscaping, trees and special views. The production of the Brecon Conservation Area appraisal, like all appraisals, will help us to understand the particular character of Brecon and what makes it special. Anyone who has an interest is welcome to let us know what they think about draft appraisals – this is an opportunity for you to put your views forward.”

The public exhibition for the Brecon Conservation Area will be on display on the 18th February at the Brecon Guildhall between 11am and 4pm. Everyone is welcome to go along and speak to National Park Authority Officers regarding the proposals.
