Bannau Brycheiniog Welsh Writing Competition

Bannau Brycheiniog Welsh Writing Competition – describe your corner of the Park in Welsh and you could win a prize.

As part of this year’s Wales Outdoor Learning Week, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority are launching a Welsh Writing Competition open to the area’s young people.
The Authority want to hear about the hidden treasures that schoolchildren have discovered outdoors amongst nature in their corner of the Park during lockdown, via competition entries written in Welsh.

The aim of Wales Outdoor Learning Week, 19 – 25 April 2021, is to encourage and inspire teachers, learning groups and families across Wales to connect with nature and the natural world through school and family life. During the last year people and children across the Park have been spending more time connecting with their local natural environment and discovering what makes the National Park such a special place to live. This competition will give young writers aged 11-16 the opportunity to but pen to paper and capture those outdoor adventures and connections with nature from the last year in Welsh as a verse, limerick, blog, article, essay, postcard, or Facebook post.

Stephanie Evans, Transition Director for the National Park Authority said, “There are so many lovely Welsh adjectives to describe the different areas of the National Park. We are looking forward to reading the descriptive pieces of up to 300 words in Welsh from children about what they have been doing and discovering during lockdown. After all, the Welsh language is an integral part of the Park’s landscape and what better way of celebrating it than reading lively descriptions of the landscape written by the children of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park in Welsh.”

The Bannau Brycheiniog Welsh Writing Competition categories are: under 11 learner; under 11 first language; 11 – 16 learner; 11 – 16 first language. Children are welcome to write a verse, limerick, blog, article, essay, postcard or facebook post. The closing date for entries is Wednesday 9th June 2021 and the address is: cystadleuaeth@beacons-npa.gov.uk or Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority, Plas y Ffynnon, Cambrian Way, Brecon, Powys, LD3 7HP.

Winners in each category will receive a prize each – an item of clothing or equipment suited to going on adventures in the outdoors. The winners will be announced by the end of the summer term: 16th July 2021.
