National Park Launches Two New Youth Initiatives

Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority have announced two new youth schemes aimed at young people aged 15-18: a Youth Warden Scheme and a Youth Committee.

The Youth Wardens Scheme is a new outdoor programme for young people aged 15-18 years. The scheme starts in September and will run throughout the academic year to July. Youth Warden days will take place once a month on weekends and during school holidays at different locations across the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. Youth wardens will be involved in activities such as surveying for wildlife, planting trees, maintaining footpaths and participating in fun events.

The youth committee provides a forum for dedicated and passionate young people aged 15-18 to share their views on how the National Park should be run, both now, and in the future. The scheme will launch with a three-day event at Plas Pencelli Outdoor Education Centre 10- 12. The brand new youth committee will have an opportunity to get involved with stand-up paddle boarding, gorge walking and orienteering, followed by round table discussions in the afternoon. The committee will then go on to meet once a month to discuss a variety of issues such as climate change, opportunities for young people, local jobs and much more. It will be led by young people, for young people.

The Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority is guided by the principles of the Future Generations Act. Staff at the Park are dedicated to investing in the future and this so often starts with young people.

Ben Geeson-Brown, Sustainable Communities Officer, said, “I’m really excited for the two new youth schemes that we are bringing to the young people of the National Park and surrounding area. The Youth Wardens will offer practical experience of working and managing this beautiful place, whilst the Youth Committee will have a real voice on how the National Park is run, both now and in the future. I can’t wait to get started!”
