BRECON Town Mayor is urging older people to put their best foot forward and get fit by taking part in free guided walks in the National Park.

Mayor Ann Mathias joined Ilona Carati and Alex Norman, of Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, for one of the Active Ageing project’s guided walks along the Brecon Canal.

The National Park has secured grants from Sports Wales and BBNPA’s Sustainable Development Fund to deliver a programme of guided walks which are tailored to fitness and capability.

Ilona Carati, Activity Leader, said the aim of the project is to encourage older people (50+) to get active, enjoy the outdoors and the company of their fellow walkers, and improve their health and wellbeing.

“We have walks arranged in Brecon, Ystradgynlais, Hay-on-Wye and Abergavenny,” said Ilona. “We were delighted to welcome Mayor Mathias to a walk in Brecon last week to help highlight the benefits of walking in the countryside.“

The walks which are held every Monday and Friday are tailored to the pace and fitness of the participants and open to individuals as well as community groups. Contact Ilona Carati 07854 997561 or Alex Norman 07854 997579 email ActiveAgeing@beacons-npa.gov.uk
